Decking

For many years decking has rightfully earned a reputation that is less than pleasant. The reasons -

• Companies like B&Q provide 'cheap' decking, cover your garden in this and it won't last, won't look good and you will be removing it very soon
• With no plan, some companies just filled any flat space with boards, with no consideration of what it might look like
• Not to mention, bad fitting-splinters - unsightly corners or 'grooves' that are meant to stop you slipping but just fill with muck and moss.

However high quality hardwood boards, used sparingly within a landscaping design, can provide a dryish and well ventillated living area. Great to provide areas where children play or for dining areas.

The type colour and style used should reflect the house, the garden and planting. Dark wood suits a more exotic planting scheme, whereas light woods fit well with stone and more traditional planting schemes. There are hundreds of 'Decking' websites, most show images of what happens when decking isnt designed to be an integral part of the landscape!!!
